LAKE RONKONKOMA, NY (OnSachem.com / OnTownMedia.com) — The Sachem community has been witnessing the rise of the “Ronkonkoma Hub” for over two years. During the past day or two, without fanfare, a milestone appeared.

Since the beginning of construction in 2017, the busy Mill Road—which ordinarily served as one the arteries to the Long Island Rail Road’s Ronkonkoma station, remained closed south of Union Avenue.

The roadway disappeared for a while as the entire area was leveled, cleared, and transformed into the eastern side of the Ronkonkoma Hub.

This morning Saturday, Jan. 11, OnSachem observed a milestone for the Ronkonkoma Hub.

Mill Road has reopened.

The reopening occurred quietly. There was no announcement. No fanfare. No celebration. Someone driving along Union Avenue could have even overlooked the opening.

As of today—and perhaps even a day or two ago, Mill Road is open again.

OnSachem took an opportunity to capture several photos and recorded a video drive-through.

The Ronkonkoma Hub was first announced in 2011 as a state-of-the-art transit-oriented development adjacent to the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) Ronkonkoma station. Construction began in November 2017 and completion is expected by 2027. Once finished, the major mixed-use development that will turn 53 acres into 1,450 apartments, and over 600,000 square feet of commercial space, including offices, medical space, retail, and restaurants. TRITEC Real Estate Company of East Setauket is building the project.

The Ronkonkoma Hub is part of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s Regional Economic Development Council projects. In total, the project is expected to invest more than $700 million into the community and generate over 10,000 construction jobs and employment opportunities of over 2,500 new permanent jobs, according to the governor’s office.
