FARMINGVILLE, NY — The Town of Brookhaven has settled charges that it allegedly violated federal Clean Air Act requirements at its landfill in Brookhaven. As part of the settlement federal officials announced Thursday, the town will pay a civil penalty of nearly $250,000 and bring the facility into compliance. Read more

SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY — Five mosquito samples have tested positive for West Nile virus across Suffolk County from samples collected last week, health officials announced Thursday evening. Closest to the Sachem area, samples in Bay Shore and Brentwood tested positive from this latest round of tests. The first positive within Sachem came from a Holtsville sample collected in mid-July and a second sample tested positive from neighboring North Patchogue during the following week. Read more

CENTRAL ISLIP — The U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Department of Justice said MS-13 gang members have been indicted for six murders on Long Island. In the announcement, the Eastern District of New York for the U.S. Attorney's Office detailed how the alleged murders occurred, including victims being hacked with machetes, one shot numerous times and another decapitated.   Read more

GARDEN CITY, NY — An indictment was filed today in federal court in Central Islip charging Thomas Blaha with traveling to the Philippines with intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct, sexual exploitation of a child, distribution of child pornography and possession of child pornography. Blaha was arrested on a complaint in February 2020 and released on a $1 million bond. He will be arraigned at a later date. Read more
