Pickup Truck Hits, Kills Man Crossing Busy Street in Wheelchair

NORTH PATCHOGUE, NY (OnSachem.com / OnTownMedia.com) — A man crossing a busy roadway in his wheelchair was struck and killed by a pickup truck last night.

According to police, the accident happened on Waverly Avenue in North Patchogue, about 200 feet south of Gateway Boulevard, at about 8:40 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10.

Police identified the victim as Harold Ferreri, 62, of Patchogue. Police said he had no known street address.

Investigators say the accident occurred as Farreri attempted to cross the street in his wheelchair. He was struck by a 2003 Dodge Ram Pickup being driven by Santiago Diaz, 45, of Central Islip.

Ferreri was transported to Long Island Community Hospital in East Patchogue where he was pronounced dead. Diaz stayed at the scene and was uninjured. The vehicle was impounded for a safety check.
