BOHEMIA, NY — Another Sachem-area Kmart is about to be gone. The company announced it will permanently close the Bohemia location by February 2020.
The store is located at 5151 Sunrise Hwy. Kmart shares the same shopping center as the long-vacant OfficeMax, Borders Books & Music, Sports Authority and Babies R Us.
The announcement follows Kmart closing the Farmingville location on North Ocean Avenue earlier this month, after announcing in August it would close.
When OnSachem reported on the company’s decision last summer to close Farmingville, spokesperson Larry Costello said, “We will continue to evaluate our network of Sears and Kmart stores and cannot rule out additional store closures in the near term.”
New York State labor law typically requires employers like the Kmart location to file a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN), giving employees notice of 90 days. A notice regarding Kmart’s Bohemia location has not yet been posted to the state Department of Labor website as of 1:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 8.
Parent company Transformco announced yesterday, Nov. 7, it will close an additional 96 Sears and Kmart stores, including Bohemia.
“Since purchasing substantially all the assets of Sears Holdings Corporation in February 2019, Transformco has faced a difficult retail environment and other challenges. We have been working hard to position Transformco for success by focusing on our competitive strengths and pruning operations that have struggled due to increased competition and other factors,” the statement read.
“To support these initiatives, our owners (along with a third-party investor) have recently provided the company approximately $250 million in new capital. As part of this process, we have made the difficult but necessary decision to streamline our operations and close 96 Sears and Kmart stores. Going out of business sales at these stores are expected to begin on December 2.”
Once Kmart closes in Bohemia, the only remaining Kmart on Long Island will be in Bridgehampton at 2044 Montauk Highway.
The Sears location at Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove is not among the locations announced for closure yesterday.
