The news of Topgolf’s arrival has not been a secret. As OnSachem was first to report on Sept. 16, the Town of Brookhaven Planning Board approved the company’s plans to build a golf, restaurant and bar complex.
The location for the new Topgolf is a nearly 27-acre site along the north side of the Long Island Expressway west of Morris Avenue. The property is located between Zebra Technologies to the west and Cheap Sam’s Plant Bargains to the east. The land had been wooded and undeveloped until construction began recently. The project included clearing the trees.
Homes along Lakeside Drive in Holtsville are next to the site. During an earlier Planning Board Meeting on Aug. 19 which included a public hearing for the project, homeowners from Lakeside Drive appealed to the Planning Board to decline the project, saying it would disrupt the community, generate noise with music from the rooftop restaurant, be an eyesore with the golf netting poles extending up to 170 feet tall, cause traffic concerns in the residential area along Morris Avenue and possibly have drunk drivers leaving the complex.
Several of those homeowners came to the subsequent Planning Board meeting on Sept.16 for the vote and told OnSachem they were disappointed by the board’s approval.
Topgolf officially announced the Holtsville project this week and said it plans to open the complex in early 2021.
