Coronavirus in Suffolk: Four deaths today, confirmed cases surpass 400

SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY (OnSachem.com / OnTownMedia.com) — Four people died of coronavirus today as the number of confirmed cases surpassed well above 400 in Suffolk County.

According to the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, 459 people tested positive for COVID-19 as of 2 p.m. today, March 20. This is an increase of 220 from the day prior. Testing has increased significantly during the past two days, which contributed to the number of confirmations.

This number includes seven deaths, four of which were reported today.

Deaths reported today are:

• A man in his 90s with underlying health conditions who was in mandatory isolation at a local nursing facility

• A woman in her 90s with underlying health conditions who was in mandatory isolation at a local nursing facility

• A man in his 90s with underlying health conditions who was in mandatory isolation at a local nursing facility

• A fourth individual - details pending

The Suffolk County Police Department today received confirmation of the first positive Coronavirus case within the department. The officer, a male in his 50s, remains in isolation and the Police Department has been in contact with the Suffolk County Department of Health to ensure all necessary steps and precautions are taken.

The Department of Health Services did not have a breakdown by township available when this article first posted. The town-by-town totals were released late Friday night have been added below:

• Babylon -- 68 patients

• Brookhaven -- 54 patients

• East Hampton -- 4 patients

• Huntington -- 97 patients

• Islip -- 85 patients

• Riverhead -- 9 patients

• Shelter Island -- 1 patient

• Smithtown -- 29 patients

• Southampton -- 11 patients

• Southold -- 64 patients

• Currently unavailable – 37 patients

A drive-thru testing center is now open in Suffolk County at Stony Brook University in the South Parking Lot. Testing is open for Suffolk County residents by appointments only if they have symptoms or may have come in contact with someone who tested positive. To schedule an appointment, call the New York State Department of Health at 888-364-3065. A healthcare professional will determine if testing is needed and, if so, an appointment will be scheduled.
