Coronavirus in Suffolk today: 7 more deaths and 4,138 cases total

SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY (OnSachem.com / OnTownMedia.com) — Another seven deaths were reported today in Suffolk County due to coronavirus. Meanwhile, the number of confirmed cases increased by more than 700 since yesterday.

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services released the latest number of deaths and confirmed cases today, March 28. The seven deaths were three people in their 80s and 90s, one in their 70s, two in their 60s, and one in their 50s. Six had underlying health conditions in mandatory isolation at local hospitals. The seventh died at home.

There are now 4,138 confirmed cases in the county, up 735 from the 3,385 cases reported yesterday. Of those cases, 409 are hospitalized, which is up 78 from yesterday. Among those presently hospitalized, 139 are in intensive care units, up 20 from yesterday.

As part of the afternoon update, the Department of Health Services released the township-by-township breakdown of confirmed cases. The breakdown comprises information from the records available to Suffolk County at this time, the county's announcement stated. The Sachem area (Farmingville, Holbrook, Holtsville, south Lake Grove and Lake Ronkonkoma) includes portions of Brookhaven, Islip and Smithtown townships.

• Huntington - 641, up from 594 on March 27

• Brookhaven - 517, up from 452 on March 27 

• Babylon - 476, up from 424 on March 27

• Smithtown - 178, up from 157 on March 27

• Southold - 131, up from 129 on March 27

• Southampton - 72, up from 65 on March 27

• Riverhead - 60, up from 56 on March 27

• East Hampton - 20, no change from March 27

• Shelter Island - 1, no change from March 27

• Township not known - 325

The drive-thru testing center at Stony Brook University is in the South Parking Lot. Testing is open for Suffolk County residents by appointments only if they have symptoms or may have come in contact with someone who tested positive. To schedule an appointment, call the New York State Department of Health at 888-364-3065. A healthcare professional will determine if testing is needed and, if so, an appointment will be scheduled.
