Coronavirus in Suffolk today: Two more deaths and 2,735 cases

SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY ( / — Two additional people have died from coronavirus in Suffolk County, bringing the number of deaths to 22. Meanwhile, the total number of cases has increased close to 500 in a single day.

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services released the latest number of deaths and confirmed cases today, March 26. The two deaths were people in their 80s with underlying health conditions in mandatory isolation at local hospitals. 

There are now 2,735 confirmed cases in the county, up 475 from the 2,260 cases reported yesterday. Of those cases, 287 are hospitalized, which is up 81 from yesterday. Among those presently hospitalized, 103 are in intensive care units, up 36 from yesterday.

As part of the afternoon update, the Department of Health Services released the township-by-township breakdown of confirmed cases. The breakdown comprises information from the records available to Suffolk County at this time, the county's announcement stated. The Sachem area includes portions of Brookhaven, Islip and Smithtown townships.

The drive-thru testing center at Stony Brook University is in the South Parking Lot. Testing is open for Suffolk County residents by appointments only if they have symptoms or may have come in contact with someone who tested positive. To schedule an appointment, call the New York State Department of Health at 888-364-3065. A healthcare professional will determine if testing is needed and, if so, an appointment will be scheduled.
