FARMINGVILLE, NYAND LAKE RONKONKOMA, NY (OnSachem.com / OnTownMedia.com) — The Sachem high school athletic fields will be illuminated on the evening of May 1, giving new meaning to "Friday Night Lights" as a tribute to high school seniors.

This special event will take place at schools across Long Island simultaneously from 8:20 to 8:40 p.m. Friday to recognize the seniors during the ongoing closure of schools and cancellation of spring sports during the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.

Sachem High School East in Farmingville and Sachem High School North in Lake Ronkonkoma will participate by lighting the fields and displaying "2020" on the scoreboards.

"This tribute was borne out of a desire by the Nassau and Suffolk athletic associations to acknowledge the high school seniors who will not have that last opportunity to wear their team uniform and compete for the love of the game, and with pride for their district and community," the principals of Sachem High Schools East and North, along with other district administrators, wrote in a letter posted on school district social media.

"As public gatherings are still not permitted and social distancing policies remain in place our school campuses will be closed during this event and we ask you not to come out to school. Video and pictures of the event will be shared through social media and our district website," the letter said.

Dear Sachem Community,

In conjunction with many school districts on Long Island, the Sachem High Schools will both be participating in a tribute to all of our high school seniors, and in particular our senior athletes, this Friday night, May 1st from 8:20-8:40 pm.

Tomorrow was chosen as the day for the tribute because May 1st is National College Signing Day. It is a day celebrated across the country where high school student athletes make one of their first adult decisions and choose their college or university. Our two high schools would normally host ceremonies where students proudly declare the college they intend to attend in the fall. Sadly, this will not take place this year.

This tribute was borne out of a desire by the Nassau and Suffolk athletic associations to acknowledge the high school seniors who will not have that last opportunity to wear their team uniform and compete for the love of the game, and with pride for their district and community.

During this time the lights and scoreboards will be illuminated and display "2020" as a tribute to our graduating seniors. We also ask that our community members turn their house and business lights on and off for a few minutes during this time as a show of support for our wonderful Sachem community.

As public gatherings are still not permitted and social distancing policies remain in place our school campuses will be closed during this event and we ask you not to come out to school. Video and pictures of the event will be shared through social media and our district website.

Please stay home, stay safe and stay SACHEM STRONG!!

Thank you,

Patti Trombetta, Principal Sachem North High School

Lou Antonetti, Principal Sachem East High School

Gary Beutel, Director of Health and Physical Education, Services & Athletics

Shannon McEntee, Administrator for Physical Education

Dr. Anthony J. Mauro, Assistant Superintendent for Health Student Support & Administration
