NY's self-quarantine mandate grows to 35 states and territories

SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY (OnSachem.com / OnTownMedia.com) — Headed to Vegas? Get ready to self-quarantine when you get back home in New York State. Nevada is among five states added to New York’s COVID-19 travel advisory.

After six states were dropped from New York’s self-quarantine mandate for travelers last week, five states have been added this week. Now 35 states and territories are on New York’s COVID-19 travel advisory.

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on Tuesday the five added states — Arizona, Minnesota, Nevada, Rhode Island, and Wyoming — now meet the metrics for community spread of COVID-19, landing them on the travel advisory.

"For a clear example of the continuing extent of the COVID crisis in America, look no further than New York's travel advisory list," Cuomo said. "The virus' spread across the country—new cases have increased more than 15 percent in the last 10 days—makes it all the more urgent that we stay vigilant here at home. That's why New Yorkers need to continue wearing masks, socially distancing and washing their hands in conjunction with the careful enforcement of local governments. We can defeat this virus by staying New York Tough, but we have a long way to go."

With the latest changes, Cuomo said 35 states and territories meet the metrics of significant community spread to qualify for the travel advisory, which requires individuals from those areas to self-quarantine for 14 days once they arrive in New York to help prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus. The quarantine applies to any person arriving from an area with a positive test rate higher than 10 per 100,000 residents over a 7-day rolling average or an area with a 10 percent or higher positivity rate over a 7-day rolling average.

The updated travel advisory now applies to 35 states and territories, up from the 30 announced last week:
