Nokomis Students Build a 'Mitten Tree' for the Homeless

HOLBROOK, NY AND RONKONKOMA, NY (OnSachem.com / OnTownMedia.com) — First-grade students at Nokomis Elementary School in Holbrook recently turned an idea into reality just in time for the holidays.

After reading “The Mitten Tree,” students developed an idea to provide gloves to a local homeless shelter in Ronkonkoma.

As part of the students’ effort, they wrote and read announcements about their fundraiser each morning, made posters and visited classrooms to present the idea to their peers.

With help from the Nokomis community, students created a bountiful tree full of different winter clothing, including hats, scarves, gloves and mittens.

Nokomis Elementary School is located at 151 Holbrook Rd. in Holbrook. The school is part of the Sachem Central School District.
