LAKE RONKONKOMA, NY ( / — The Lake Ronkonkoma community refused to lose their beloved mural.

The eastern shoreline of Lake Ronkonkoma along Lake Shore Road is home to a picturesque mural that tells about the community’s early years as a popular lakeside getaway destination.

This is where an old concrete wall remains from a former pavilion, one of several that were around the lake. Over the years, the walls that remained were covered by graffiti.

In 2017, the Lake Ronkonkoma Improvement Group painted murals on the walls to cover the graffiti and restore beauty to the shoreline.

Then, just a few days ago—sometime between Jan. 31 and Sunday, Feb. 2—one or more vandals stray painted profanities and obscene images on the mural. The graffiti also included unkind words toward the nearby Samoset Middle School, part of the Sachem Central School District.

OnSachem Publisher Jim Green brings you the story about how the community came together this past weekend to save the mural.
