FARMINGVILLE, NY (OnSachem.com / OnTownMedia.com) — A 31-year-old mother from Farmingville has died of the serious injuries sustained during a horrific car crash involving an alleged drunk driver, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.
On Saturday afternoon, police announced the death of Erika Bautista. She died three weeks following the crash.
On Friday, Sept. 25, shortly after 5 p.m., Bautista and her three young daughters were inside their 2015 Honda, which had become disabled in the right lane of northbound County Route 83 (Patchogue-Mount Sinai Road), north of South Bicycle Path, police said.
Then a horrific scene played out as a Shirley man – allegedly driving while intoxicated according to police – smashed his 2018 Jeep into the rear of a family’s car. Police arrested Chris Montpetit, 36, of Shirley at the scene, as OnSachem News reported at the time.
Bautista and her three daughters – ages 4, 8 and 10 – were rushed to Stony Brook University Hospital immediately after the crash. All but the 10-year-old had serious injuries, police said. Bautista has since died. Updated information has not been released about the children.
According to online court records, Montpetit refused to take a breath test and the top charge against him is a misdemeanor. No information is yet available if there will be additional charges now that Bautista has died.
