Alleged Drunk Driver Hits Holbrook Man and Leaves the Scene, Police Say

CENTEREACH, EAST PATCHOGUE AND HOLBROOK, NY — A Holbrook man walking along a road is recovering after an alleged drunk driver struck him and left the scene, Suffolk Police said.

Police said the incident happened early Sunday, Nov. 3, at about 12:20 a.m.

According to police, Robert Bickmeyer was driving a 2006 Nissan eastbound on Portion Road, at the intersection of Avenue B, in Centereach when his vehicle struck a pedestrian who was walking in the bicycle lane.

The accident location along Portion Road is near where the communities of Centereach, Holbrook, Holtsville, Farmingville, and Lake Ronkonkoma meet.  

The victim, Giovanni Menendez, 40, of Holbrook, was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said Bickmeyer, 60, of 8A La Bonne Vie Drive, East Patchogue, was charged with Driving While Intoxicated and Leaving the Scene of an Accident. He will be held overnight at the Sixth Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Nov. 3.

Police remind the public that a criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
