LAKE GROVE, NY ( / — A Long Island mother has been arrested for allegedly leaving her children unattended in a cold vehicle during frigid weather outside the Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove.

According to the Suffolk County Police Department, the incident happened Wednesday shortly after 6 p.m. Wednesday when a 911 caller reported two children left unattended in a parked 2008 Nissan Pathfinder.

When Fourth Precinct officers responded, they determined the children — a 3-year-old boy and a 9-year-old girl — had been left in the vehicle which was not running by their mother for approximately 30 minutes while she shopped in the mall, police said.

The weather was cold — but above freezing — with an air temperature of approximately 37 degrees, police noted.

Guadalupe Guevara-Diaz, 27, of 149 Grand Blvd. in Brentwood, was charged with two counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, police said. She was being held overnight at the Fourth Precinct in Smithtown ahead of her arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip on Thursday.

Child Protective Services were notified, and the children were released to a friend of the family, police said.
