Cenacle Retreat Center in Lake Ronkonkoma

LAKE RONKONKOMA, NY — The Ronkonkoma Cenacle Sisters have announced the winding down of its operations. OnSachem has also learned the future of the retreat property is uncertain.

The Cenacle Retreat Center is located on 40 acres at 310 Cenacle Road in Lake Ronkonkoma.

Ronkonkoma Cenacle Sisters' announcement made online read, in part, “After much prayer, dialogue and work with consultants, the Cenacle Sisters of the North American Province acknowledge, with deep sorrow, that we do not have the sister personnel and energy to continue our ministry at the Ronkonkoma Cenacle. Consequently, we realize that we need to bring our ministry as we have known it to a close.”

According to the announcement, the Cenacle will honor, as much as possible, already scheduled retreat and hospitality programs for the current apostolic year, which ends August 2020.

OnSachem contacted the Cenacle Retreat Center to understand its future after August. The site’s future is uncertain at this point, according to Arleen Dietzel, a receptionist at the Cenacle Retreat Center.

“They’re going to be engaging in dialogue and discernment regarding the sisters and the property,” Dietzel said. “There are only 5 or 6 Sisters left" living on the property.

Dietzel said the property is owned by Cenacle Sisters of North American Province.

Here is the announcement the Ronkonkoma Cenacle Sisters made on its website and posted to its Facebook page.

Dear Cenacle Friends,

As Cenacle Sisters, we draw our inspiration from Mary, the Mother of Jesus, surrendering herself to the guidance of the Holy Spirit in the first Cenacle. At times, such stirrings of the Spirit reveal the will of God for us in ways that are very specific and concrete, although not always easy.

After much prayer, dialogue and work with consultants, the Cenacle Sisters of the North American Province acknowledge, with deep sorrow, that we do not have the sister personnel and energy to continue our ministry at the Ronkonkoma Cenacle. Consequently, we realize that we need to bring our ministry as we have known it to a close.

We plan to honor, as much as possible, already scheduled retreat and hospitality programs for this apostolic year, which ends in August, 2020. During this time, we will be available for spiritual direction, supervision and individually directed/private retreats as we are able; our Prayer Enrollment Ministry will also continue. However, we are not scheduling additional day, overnight or weekend programs. We will be engaging in dialogue and discernment regarding how our sisters who remain on Long Island will minister.

It is with both heavy and grateful hearts that we thank our Good God for your faithful support, your generous service and your deep embrace of our Cenacle mission. As we all journey together into this new time, let us hold one another in loving support.
