LAKE RONKONKOMA, NY (OnSachem.com / OnTownMedia.com) — The Ronkonkoma Chamber of Commerce hasn’t held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate a grand opening in many months, as the COVID-19 pandemic slowed business activity. That changed last weekend as community leaders welcomed Dream Hair Salon to Hawkins Avenue in Lake Ronkonkoma.
Dream Hair Salon opened officially on Monday, Oct. 5, at 452 Hawkins Ave., in the heart of the Hawkins Avenue business district. The new salon is located across the street from Flanagan’s Pub, half a block south of Portion Road, and next to the Hawkins Avenue entrance to Kohl's.
Last weekend, the chamber of commerce and elected leaders held the ceremonial ribbon cutting as Dream Hair Salon prepared to open its door to the public.
Salon owner Janet Hooghkirk picked Lake Ronkonkoma because of her long love for the area. She is a 1979 graduate of Sachem High School and frequented the Hawkins Avenue business district growing up. Now a Selden resident, Hooghkirk said the COVID-19 pandemic prompted her to become her own boss, which led to opening the salon to make a dream of many years come true.
“COVID kind of pushed me over the edge to work for myself instead of working for somebody else,” said Hooghkirk. “I always wanted to have a salon. Forty years later, here I am.”
Realizing her dream led to the appropriately named Dream Hair Salon.
Ronkonkoma Chamber of Commerce President Kevin Hyms said it was a delight to welcome a new business after the pandemic made the business environment difficult.
“These are really tough times for all our local businesses. People order from Amazon and Walmart, which means our local mom and pop shops are really in distress right now. In fact, we've been seeing closures, all over the place,” Hyms said.
He added that the ceremonial event to welcome a new business marked a long overdue turning point since the pandemic’s spread to the area in mid-March.
“We haven't had a ribbon cutting yet, during the whole pandemic times, Hyms said. “It's great to see a new business, and the chamber of commerce gladly welcomes in any new businesses, and it's fantastic that we can have this grand opening today.”
Hooghkirk said she is excited to serve clients. She described her salon as “a friendly environment with really affordable prices in a beautiful place.”
The location housed a hair salon previously, however Hooghkirk said the entire inside was cleared out and everything is new.
