Man Arrested for Alleged Cruelty to Animals in Lake Ronkonkoma

LAKE RONKONKOMA, NY — Suffolk County Police arrested a man for allegedly abusing dogs at his Lake Ronkonkoma residence last night, Friday, Nov. 1.

Police said they responded to a 911 call at 8:35 p.m. The caller reported alleged animal abuse at 9 Ave. J, Apt. A. Upon arrival, police said they found evidence that Thomas Benjamin, 56, choked and repeatedly kicked three dogs.

Sixth Precinct officers, in cooperation with Suffolk County SPCA, charged Benjamin with two counts of Animal Cruelty under the New York State Agricultural Law.

The Town of Brookhaven Animal Control responded and took possession of the dogs.

Benjamin was issued a Field Appearance Ticket and will be arraigned at a later date.

Police remind the public that a criminal charge is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
