LAKE RONKONKOMA, NY (OnSachem.com / OnTownMedia.com) — The Suffolk County Water Authority (SCWA) is warning customers about a scammer reportedly trying to get access to a residence in Lake Ronkonkoma.

Shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday, the water utility issued what it called a "scammer warning."

According to SCWA, a customer in Lake Ronkonkoma reported a man driving a black pickup truck claiming to be a SCWA employee and wanted to enter her home, saying he needed to "check the meter." The man is reportedly carrying what appears to be a SCWA identification badge, SCWA said.

The customer notified the Suffolk County Police Department, the water utility said.

"Please know that a real SCWA employee would drive a marked SCWA vehicle and carry an authentic SCWA ID badge," SCWA wrote in the scammer warning to customers.

SCWA added, "Entering customers' homes without an appointment is also extremely rare, and only done in specific circumstances. If you need to confirm the identity of an SCWA employee, please call us at 631-698-9500 and we will be happy to verify for you."

SCWA posted the warning on its Facebook page.
