SUNDAY UPDATE: Sachem High School North, which had been closed on Thursday and Friday because of COVID-19 cases among students, announced Sunday evening the closure will be extended for Monday and Tuesday. Farmingville tragedy

FARMINGVILLE, NY — A horrific scene played out in Farmingville as a Shirley man – allegedly driving while intoxicated according to Suffolk County Police – smashed into the rear of a car with a mother and her young children inside. The driver, Chris Montpetit, refused to take a breath test, according to court records. Read more

FARMINGVILLE, NY AND HOLTSVILLE, NY — A staff member in Sachem Schools has tested positive for COVID-19 and traveled between three school buildings recently, the district announced Friday. The affected staffer briefly went inside Lynwood, Sagamore and Waverly schools. This is the second COVID-19 positive case in Sachem since schools reopened on Sept. 9. Read more

FARMINGVILLE, NY — The Town of Brookhaven has settled charges that it allegedly violated federal Clean Air Act requirements at its landfill in Brookhaven. As part of the settlement federal officials announced Thursday, the town will pay a civil penalty of nearly $250,000 and bring the facility into compliance. Read more

LAKE RONKONKOMA, NY — A drive along Ronkonkoma Avenue in Lake Ronkonkoma is now much smoother. Brookhaven Town Highway Superintendent Daniel P. Losquadro and 5th District Councilman Neil Foley announced the resurfacing of Ronkonkoma Avenue from Portion Road to the North Service Road of the Long Island Expressway. Read more
