Advisory against swimming at 64 Suffolk beaches following Tropical Storm Fay

RONKONKOMA, NY ( / — Following the torrential rainfall and runoff on Thursday, 64 beaches now have an advisory against bathing.

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services issued the advisory Thursday. Closest to the Sachem area, the 64 beaches include Ronkonkoma Beach in Ronkonkoma, Bayport Beach in Bayport, Corey Beach in Blue Point, Sayville Marina Park Beach in Sayville, and West Oaks Recreation Club Beach in West Sayville.

"The advisory is based on the knowledge that bacteria at levels that exceed New York State standards will affect these beaches," according to the Department of Health. "The beaches covered by the advisory are located in areas that are heavily influenced by stormwater runoff from the surrounding watersheds or adjacent tributaries, and because of their location in an enclosed embayment, experience limited tidal flushing."

The department recommends that bathing and other water contact be suspended in affected areas until the waters have been flushed by two successive tidal cycles — at least a 24-hour period — after the rainfall ends. This advisory will be lifted at 6 a.m. Saturday, unless sampling conducted by the Department of Health reveals elevated levels of bacteria persisting beyond the 24-hour period.

For the latest information on affected beaches, call the Bathing Beach HOTLINE at 852-5822, contact the Department's Office of Ecology at 631-852-5760 during normal business hours, or visit Suffolk County Department of Health Services beach monitoring webpage.
