Hit-and-run driver seriously injured two children on bikes: Police

According to police, the hit-and-run happened on Express Drive North, 500 feet east of Old Nichols Road, in Ronkonkoma, NY. The location borders Islandia, NY, and Ronkonkoma.

RONKONKOMA, NY (OnSachem.com / OnTownMedia.com) — Suffolk County Police Major Case Unit detectives are investigating a hit-and-run crash that seriously injured two boys on bicycles in Ronkonkoma last night.

According to police, three boys were riding bicycles westbound on the shoulder of Express Drive North, 500 feet east of Old Nichols Road, when two of the boys were struck by a westbound vehicle at 7:34 p.m. The driver then fled the scene.

This portion of Express Drive North borders Ronkonkoma and Islandia.

A 9-year-old boy from North Amityville was airlifted by Suffolk County Police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital in serious condition. A 12-year-old Ronkonkoma boy was transported by ambulance to the same hospital for treatment of serious injuries. The third bicyclist, a 6-year-old Ronkonkoma boy, was not injured.

Police said detectives believe the vehicle that struck the two boys is a 2002-2005, white Ford Explorer with front end damage, front passenger side damage, and a missing passenger side headlight assembly.
