FARMINGVILLE, NY (OnSachem.com / OnTownMedia.com) — A winter storm with snow and sleet will create hazardous conditions across Long Island on Thursday and Friday. By the time the storm moves out, there could be up to 8 inches of snow in some areas, including in the greater Sachem area.
The National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Long Island from 4 a.m. Thursday to 7 p.m. Friday.
"This will be a long-duration winter weather event," according to the weather service. "Light to moderate snowfall is likely early Thursday morning into afternoon. A light wintry mix of sleet and/or freezing rain is possible for a period Thursday evening into Thursday night, before turning back to light snow on Friday morning and ending in the afternoon or evening."
Forecasters expect snowfall accumulations of 3 to 5 inches on Thursday, with total snowfall accumulations of 4 to 8 inches by the time the storm ends on Friday. Locally in greater Sachem, the storm could dump as much as 8 inches of snow.
There is a weather technicality that prevents this storm from presently being designated with the more serious "Winter Storm Warning," the National Weather Service posted on Facebook.
"Please note an advisory was issued and not a warning because [a] winter storm warning is based on two sets of criteria timewise, 12 hr. and 24 hr.," according to the weather service. "The 12 hr. criteria requires 6 inches of snow, and the 24 hr. criteria requires 8 inches. We are forecasting the snow amounts to materialize outside (taking longer to accumulate) of the aforementioned time requirements."
