As Sachem returns from spring recess, COVID-19 infects another 50

LAKE RONKONKOMA, NY (OnSachem.com / OnTownMedia.com) — Upon students returning to classes following the weeklong spring recess, Sachem Central School District reported 50 COVID-19 infections over 10 days from March 27 to April 5.

The latest cases are in addition to 64 positives over seven days from March 20 to 26 leading up to the vacation break, as OnSachem News reported.

Combining the two periods, Sachem Schools experienced 114 infections over 17 days between March 20 and April 5. Since the school year began in September, the district reported 992 positives as of April 5.

Meanwhile, students in grades 7, 9, and 10 are scheduled to begin in-person learning five days a week on Monday, April 12. The three grades make up the third and final phase to bring Sachem’s middle school and high school students back to the classroom every day, ending hybrid instruction which had students alternating daily between in-person and remote learning.

The following are the latest increases and total positives at each school in Sachem, according to reporting from March 27 to April 5. Minor discrepancies are possible as recent cases synch with the state and district online dashboards. There may be periodic changes to prior updates.

Sachem Elementary Schools 

• Cayuga Elementary School in Lake Grove – 27 cases, up 2 (17 students, 10 teachers/staff)

• Chippewa Elementary School in Holtsville – 39 cases, up 2 (28 students, 11 teachers/staff)

• Grundy Avenue Elementary School in Holbrook – 41 cases, up 4 (35 students, 6 teachers/staff)

• Hiawatha Elementary School in Lake Ronkonkoma – 33 cases, up 1 (26 students, 7 teachers/staff)

• Lynwood Avenue Elementary School in Farmingville – 59 cases, up 2 (50 students including 19 off-site students, 9 teachers/staff including 3 off-site teachers/staff)

• Merrimac Elementary School in Holbrook – 25 cases, up 0 (22 students, 3 teachers/staff)

• Seneca Middle School in Holbrook – 89 cases, up 2 (68 students including 5 off-site students, 21 teachers/staff)

Sachem High Schools

• Sachem High School East in Farmingville – 190 cases, up 10 (162 students including 4 off-site students, 28 teachers/staff)

• Sachem High School North in Lake Ronkonkoma – 226 cases, up 11 (198 students including 19 off-site students, 28 teachers/staff)
