COVID-19 cases increase at Sachem HS North & East, District to announce Sunday night if North will reopen Monday

LAKE RONKONKOMA, NY ( / — Sachem School officials announced that a decision will be made on Sunday about whether to reopen Sachem High School North in Lake Ronkonkoma on Monday, as the number of reported COVID-19 cases among students at both HS North and East increased since Friday. Meanwhile, OnSachem has learned the type of social event that led to the spike in cases among several schools.

“The district will inform the community of its decision on whether Sachem High School North will remain on distance learning or be open for live instruction on Monday, October 5 following consultation with the Suffolk County DOHS at 5 pm today (Sunday),” read an announcement from the Sachem Central School District. “An update on this matter will be shared as quickly as possible,” the message continued.

Sachem High School North has been closed for in-person instruction since Thursday as COVID-19 hit students. Late Wednesday, Sachem Schools superintendent Christopher Pellettieri announced “more than one student” at the school tested positive for COVID-19.

Since that announcement, the number of COVID-19 cases reported at Sachem High School North has increased. According to the New York State COVID-19 Report Card data as of 5:20 p.m. Friday, there were three COVID-19 cases at Sachem High School North among students. As of 1:15 p.m. Sunday, the number has increased to five students testing positive for COVID-19.

On Friday, Pellettieri announced that a single social event last weekend led to the positive COVID-19 cases among students at several Sachem school buildings. In addition to Sachem High School North, COVID-19 cases were reported among students at Sachem High School East in Farmingville and Seneca Middle School in Holbrook. A source familiar with the situation told OnSachem that the social event was a Sweet 16 birthday party.

While the COVID-19 cases at Seneca Middle School remain at the one reported as of Friday, Sachem High School East increased from the one reported on Friday to three cases as of 1:15 p.m. Sunday. According to the New York State Report Card, Sachem East now has three COVID-19 cases affecting two students and one teacher/staff member.

Sachem High School East and Seneca Middle School continued with in-person instruction last week as Sachem High School North moved to distance-learning only.
