COVID-19 positives climb another 14 in Sachem Schools

LAKE RONKONKOMA, NY (OnSachem.com / OnTownMedia.com) — The number of positive COVID-19 cases in Sachem Central School District is approaching the 400-mark.

Sachem Schools had 14 new positive cases of COVID-19 on Friday, Jan. 8, according to the latest data New York state and school officials released Saturday, Jan. 9. The greatest number of new positives were reported for Sachem High School North in Lake Ronkonkoma.

The latest positives brought the cumulative number of COVID-19 cases to 393 across Sachem Schools since the academic year started in September.

"We are starting to see people get vaccinated including some of our staff. As a matter of fact, our school nurses, social workers, psychologists, OT, PT, and Speech Pathologists were contacted this week as per the NYS Vaccination Distribution Plan to receive the vaccination," District Superintendent Christopher J. Pellettieri wrote in a memo to the Sachem community on Friday. "I am hopeful there is finally a light at the end of the tunnel. Please let us continue to social distance in and out of schools, wear our masks when around others and keep washing those hands."

• Cayuga Elementary School in Lake Grove – 11 cases, up 0 (8 students, 3 teachers/staff)

• Chippewa Elementary School in Holtsville – 14 cases, up 0 (11 students, 3 teachers/staff)

• Grundy Avenue Elementary School in Holbrook – 15 cases, up 1 (13 students, 2 teacher/staff)

• Hiawatha Elementary School in Lake Ronkonkoma – 20 cases, up 0 (15 students, 5 teachers/staff)

• Lynwood Avenue Elementary School in Farmingville – 11 cases, up 1 (9 students, 2 teachers/staff)

• Nokomis Elementary School in Holbrook – 19 cases, up 1 (13 students, 6 teachers/staff)

• Waverly Avenue Elementary School in Holtsville – 16 cases, up 0 (12 students, 4 teachers/staff)

• Seneca Middle School in Holbrook – 35 cases, up 2 (25 students including 4 off-site students, 10 teachers/staff)

Sachem High Schools

• Sachem High School East in Farmingville – 70 cases, up 1 (61 students including 3 off-site students, 9 teachers/staff)

• Sachem High School North in Lake Ronkonkoma – 98 cases, up 5 (84 students including 11 off-site students, 14 teachers/staff)
