Just Approved: Sachem Schools Calendar for the 2020-2021 School Year

LAKE RONKONKOMA, NY (OnSachem.com / OnTownMedia.com) — Sachem families can begin making their travel plans for the upcoming school year. The new school calendar is out showing which days schools are closed.

The Board of Education approved the 2020-2021 academic calendar during its meeting last night, Feb. 12.

Among the big changes for 2020-2021, the first day of school is Tuesday, Sept., 8, because Labor Day falls later this year.

Students will enjoy an extra-long Thanksgiving Recess with a five-day weekend beginning Wednesday, Nov. 25.

However, Winter Recess will be shorter this coming school year, with schools closed from Thursday, Dec. 24, to Friday, Jan. 1.

If there are no snow closings, students will have a six-day Memorial Day weekend.

Here are some key dates for the school year ahead:

  • Sept. 8 – First day of school (Sept. 2 and 4 are staff development days)
  • Nov. 25-27 – Thanksgiving break
  • Dec. 24-Jan. 1 – Winter Recess
  • Feb. 15-19 – Mid-Winter Recess
  • March 29-April 2 – Spring Recess
  • May 28 and 31 – Memorial Day
  • June 24 – Last Day of Regents Exams
  • June 25 – Last Day of School
  • June 24-25 – Elementary half days

In the event of too many—or too few—snow days, the full calendar includes modifications with extra dates when school would either be open or closed.

  • 0 snow closings – Schools closed May 27 and June 1
  • 1 snow closing – Schools closed June 1
  • 2-5 snow closings – Calendar remains the same

Half days for elementary parent-teacher conferences will be identified in summer 2021.

The calendar is available for download here on the school district’s website.
