Sachem Schools postpones HS graduation ceremonies to late July

LAKE RONKONKOMA, NY ( / — The Sachem Central School District has postponed all high school graduation ceremonies until late July.

Sachem High School North Principal Patti Trombetta, Sachem High School East Principal Lou Antonetti, and Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum & Instruction Erin Hynes shared the announcement.

In a memo, they wrote, in part, “As you may be aware, last week, Governor Cuomo and the NYS Health Department, released guidance prohibiting school districts from holding gatherings with more than 150 individuals prior to July. Considering this news, we have made the decision to postpone ‘live’ ceremonies that were to be held on June 22nd and 23rd to the week of July 20th.”

The district previously announced plans for graduation ceremonies should an in-person or drive-through event be allowed in June (read the related article here). However, based on the latest directives from New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, the district is postponing the graduations (read the related article here about Cuomo’s mandate).

“We are optimistic that the postponement to July will result in a commencement that is aligned to our time-honored traditions we hold dear in Sachem. As the week of July 20th draws closer, we will be in contact with details. Please note, should we receive guidance permitting us to host a ceremony for the entire senior class at each building, we will plan accordingly,” wrote Trombetta, Antonetti and Hynes.
